What is the Visa Bulletin and when is it released?+
The Visa Bulletin is a monthly publication by the U.S. Department of State that shows the availability of immigrant visa numbers. It is typically released on the 2nd Tuesday of each month for the following month. The bulletin sets the "priority dates" — if your priority date is before the date listed, your visa number is available.
What is the difference between Final Action Date and Dates for Filing?+
The Final Action Date (FAD) is the date by which USCIS will approve your green card application. The Dates for Filing (DFF) is an earlier date that, if authorized by USCIS each month, allows you to file your I-485 adjustment of status application even before your priority date is fully current. Using DFF gets you work authorization (EAD) and travel document (AP) earlier.
What does retrogression mean and should I be worried?+
Retrogression occurs when a priority date moves backward — meaning fewer visa numbers are available than expected. This typically happens in July–September as the fiscal year end approaches and visa quotas run out. EB-2 India historically sees retrogression risk in Q4 of the fiscal year (July–September). The October bulletin for a new fiscal year often brings a significant jump forward.
Why does EB-3 India sometimes move faster than EB-2?+
EB-2 and EB-3 draw from the same pool of per-country visa numbers, but demand varies. When many applicants "downgrade" from EB-2 to EB-3 to use the faster date, it can slow EB-3. Conversely, if EB-2 demand is very high, EB-3 may move faster due to leftover visa numbers. Always consult with an immigration attorney before downgrading or changing categories.
